Dept. of Environmental Conservation reports big dip in contamination spills

07/09/11 The number of open spills handled by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has dropped 61 percent over the past eight years, the DEC reported this past week. In January 2003, when the DEC began taking more aggressive measures to follow through on spill cleanups, there were 32,948 open spills statewide. At the end of fiscal year 2010-11 the number had dropped to 12,752.
