01/02/11 WHITNEY POINT -- Fishermen, start your augers. The Almost-Annual New York State Crappie Derby is scheduled for Jan. 29 at Whitney Point Lake in Whitney Point. A family-friendly event designed for those suffering cabin fever, the derby includes the ice fishing contest as well as other attractions.
02/16/10 Attendance was stunted somewhat by the postponing of the event from an earlier date, and possibly by its proximity to Valentine's Day. But the almost-annual Crappie Derby nevertheless drew more than 3,700 people to the frozen surface of the Whitney Point Reservoir Saturday -- 1,339 of them as registered competitors in the annual ice fishing event.
