    12/30/09 Walter Louis Schofstoll, 83, passed away December 24, 2009, in Ritzville, WA, after a valiant battle with Parkinson's disease. Born in rural Kansas on April 11, 1926, he was the oldest of four children born to Frederick and Sarah Beatrice (Hysell) Schofstoll.

    Humbling trees

    12/04/09 Even after 45 years of living in Alaska, the trees still amaze me when I visit Washington state, where I was born and raised. As I write this, I'm in my son's house in Anacortes, looking out a window at towering fir and cedar trees, vastly different from the trees of the Kenai Peninsula lowlands.
