Area events set to mark Memorial Day

05/27/11 Originally known has Decoration Day, the Memorial Day holiday was first observed by the federal government following the Civil War, beginning with a general order issued in 1868 by Army commander General John Logan that on May 30 of that year flowers would be placed on the graves of all Union and Confederate soldiers buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
